North Dakota Young Professionals recognize Bismarck business as best place to work Bismarck, N.D. - Encouragement of young workers to build their future in North Dakota has been a focus of many within the state. And, in order to build a future, young workers are looking for opportunities to be a part of companies that will help them build their homes and leave their legacies within the area. That’s why the North Dakota Young Professionals (NDYP) find it important to recognize businesses that provide high quality jobs and internships, especially those companies that offer great opportunities for young professionals. NDYP has chosen North Dakota Stockmen’s Association (NDSA) in Bismarck as the 2009 Best Place to Work. “These awards are a great opportunity to showcase some of the most innovative ways businesses work with Young Professionals,” says Catherine Dalzell, NDYP coordinator. “The quality of applications this year was fantastic – these businesses show that even in a recession, businesses find creative ways to attract and retain young people.” Sheyna Strommen, communications director at North Dakota Stockmen's Association (NDSA), considers the organization to be a great place for young professionals to work because many opportunities are available to each employee to be involved in national associations, as well as state wide task forces. The NDSA’s office staff of 10 is predominantly comprised of young professionals. Each is encouraged to participate in professional development opportunities, but NDSA’s development opportunities extend to its members as well. One example is an NDSA partnership with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA). They send one young volunteer and producer-leader to the annual Young Cattlemen’s College. This conference lasts 10 days with all-expenses paid, and exposes 20- to 45-year olds to the beef industry on a national basis, including the federal political process. The Best Place to Work and Best Place to Intern awards, started by the NDYP in 2008, are a reflection of the creativity and innovation that businesses offer Young Professionals. In order to be considered for the award, applicants submitted a detailed questionnaire about the company benefits, advancement opportunities, and why their business is an outstanding place for young professionals to work or intern. A statewide committee of four Young Professional judges sifted through the nominees, determining the winners, as well as five runners up in the Best Place to Work category. Runners up as Top Places to Work include the following employers: National Information Solutions Corp (NISC), Mandan; North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT), Bismarck; Ackerman-Estvold Engineering, Minot; Applied Engineering, Bismarck; and Barr Engineering, Bismarck. In addition to selecting the 2009 Best Place to Work, the NDYP also selected a Best Place to Intern. Yesterday, NDYP announced Absolute Marketing Group in Moorhead, Minn., as the 2009 Best Place to Intern. Read Trina's past columns here
