Minot Young Professionals Celebrate 2nd Successful Year
The year 2009 will serve as the year the Minot Young Professionals dove into the community. “We put a large emphasis on impacting the community in 2009. We worked hard to ensure that our group was looked upon as a strong partner for community organizations,” said 2009 President Scott Louser.
In the spring, YP members spent time helping judge the state DECA competition, filled sandbags, put on a community-wide end of school celebration and fundraised for the YP Relay for Life team. In the fall, YP members judged a business case-study competition at MSU, brought speaker Bill Rancic to MSU and held a Souris Valley United Way fundraiser at the Barley Pop, which generated over $700 for United Way.
This winter, YPs donated hats and mittens for the Minot Area Homeless Coalition, rang bells for the Salvation Army’s red kettle campaign and worked with the Minot Area Homeless Coalition to provide Christmas presents for local families. Additionally, during the Salvation Army’s annual food basket and toy distribution, YP helped local families pick up their food baskets and choose toys for their children.
“Volunteer opportunities are abundant in our community, as there are a lot of unmet needs within organizations. This makes it very easy for our members to get involved,” said 2010 Outreach Chair Jessica Ackerman.
YP also hosted a variety of social, professional development and networking events to help YP members stay connected and grow professionally. Events included monthly 5:01’s, family social events as well as monthly professional development series titled Power Hours. The culmination of a year’s worth of successes was celebrated on New Year’s Eve at the 2nd annual YP Gala.
“As young professionals, these individuals are all busy with work, school, family, friends, and other commitments, but it’s great to see that they still take time to give back to the community and provide a constructive outlet for young professionals in Minot,” said John MacMartin, Chamber President.
YP is open to individuals age 21-39, annual dues are $25 and can be submitted to the Chamber.
